Chapter 16

Jayce

The best day of my life soon turned into one of the most confusing, but I was more determined than I ever had been to get to the bottom of whatever the hell was really going on at EraCorp. I knew Wren was covering up for someone, and I was pretty damn sure that someone was Tyler. There was no love lost between those two, so I could only assume Tyler was threatening him. Wren wasn’t a timid, easily swayed person so whatever Tyler had on him had the potential to do damage, which meant I was in the unpleasant position of lying to my mate and my family.

This had to stop. I hadn’t slept at all the night before, but combing the company database was useless. Tyler had done a decent job of covering his tracks after his first blunder, and I had reached the end of what I could accomplish with my clearance level. Before I risked sneaking into the other alpha’s office, I decided to try fishing for more information through Calvin. I had another meeting set up with him that night after work, and I hoped to at least be able to smooth things over with Wren beforehand.

Wren wasn’t at his desk when I arrived, but to my relief, I found him in the kitchen making a fresh pot of coffee. “Hey.” It seemed a piss-poor way to approach him after what had happened, but I needed to feel him out and something told me he wouldn’t appreciate me being overly friendly in the office.

He looked up warily, like he had something to be embarrassed about. “Good morning, Jack.”

So, weird and formal it was. I sighed. “Are you doing okay?” He’d left so fast after we woke up that I was still worried I’d hurt him the day before.

“I’m fine,” he mumbled. “Coffee?”

“Sure,” I said, pulling a couple of mugs down from the cabinet. “Can we talk later? I’m doing something after work, but maybe we could have dinner…”

He met my eyes suddenly and as sexy as the determination on his face was, I knew it didn’t bode well for me. “What happened yesterday was a mistake,” he said, casting a nervous glance at the door.

“Was it?” I challenged. “Didn’t feel like one to me.”

“Well, it was and it can’t happen again. It would be better for everyone if we just pretended like it never happened at all.”

“Better for who? For you or for whoever it is you think you need to protect?”

“I’m not protecting anyone but myself and my daughter."

“I know that’s not true, Wren. You’re scared, I can feel it, but you don’t have to be. Whatever you did or didn’t do, I’m on your side.”

“Don’t say that.” His voice cracked and the tears in his eyes shocked me more than the anger. “It’s not true. Maybe you think you want to protect me now, but there's no alpha I can count to be on my side no matter what. I learned that a long time ago.
